Unlike some systems that have been shoehorned to fit tarot, numerology is a perfect fit. In fact numerology and tarot are an essential pairing if you are to get the most out of your readings. Approaching tarot with the methodical structure of numerology can help someone learn the basic card meanings super fast.
We’ll focus on the minors, Aces to tens. The method is simple, you take the characteristics of the suit and mix it up with the characteristics of the number. This is most easiest to explain using tables. Firstly, let’s look at the basic attributes of the suits.
Cups
Love, emotions, relationships, feelings, empathy, intuition, creativity, peacefulness.
Wands
Inspiration, action, power, courage, energy, passion, careers, creativity, impulsiveness.
Pentacles
Practicalities, work, home, fertility, family, prosperity, education, manifestation, business.
Swords
Ideas, communication, mental dexterity, mental challenges, talking, writing, truths/untruths.
Now to see what each number represents.
Ace
Birth, potential, new ideas & projects, early stages, gifts, insight.
Two
Duality, balance, receptivity, attraction, choice, waiting.
Three
Increase, co-operation, fruitfulness, growth, creativity, expression, expansion.
Four
Stability, security, structure, organisation, evidence of strong foundations.
Five
Challenge, instability, problems, fluctuation, loss, changes.
Six
Harmony, peace, comfort, healing, recovery, gaining stability, relaxation, adjustment.
Seven
Assessment, questioning, spirituality, discovery, knowledge, faith, independence, individuality.
Eight
Movement (or lack of it), progress, self-motivation, accomplishment, courage, fortitude.
Nine
Nearing the end of a cycle. Achievement, awakening, self-knowledge.
Ten
Endings, beginnings or the pause in between.
Example: Five of Wands: Inspiration, action, power, courage, energy, passion, careers, creativity, impulsiveness combined with challenge, instability, problems, fluctuation, loss, changes. Therefore, the interpretation may be “A situation that you are passionate about is beset by challenges and possible losses.”
By combining the qualities of the suit with the numbers, you have all the basic meanings of the minor arcana. Your job is to expand and apply those meanings to your reading and the seeker’s question/situation.
Easier said than done, I hear you say… well, I’ve put together a tarot card cheat sheet for the Minor Arcana Aces to Tens.
